A Guide to Choosing the Colour of your Wedding Gown
Your wedding dress is arguably one of the most important parts of your big day. All eyes will be on you from the moment you start walking down the aisle to when you’re waltzing with your new husband at the reception.
When choosing a wedding dress, you need to take certain factors into account, like how its neckline and silhouette highlight your body. However, picking the right colour is equally important.
Plain white isn’t as popular a colour in modern weddings, which gives different women the freedom to experiment. They can look for a colour that will really make them feel like a blushing bride.
Since you will be the centre of attention at the ceremony and reception, you need to wear a gown in a flattering colour that brings out your personality. After all, making sure your dress is the right color is as important as picking one that fits perfectly.
Boutique shops and designers offer a wide variety of colours to choose from, so it may be hard for you to choose one. Fortunately, we’ve got you covered with this guide. We put it together to help you identify the colour that suits you the most.
Know Your Skin Tone
When presented with a broad spectrum of colors, choosing the one that complements your skin tone is no mean feat. Before you can select the right one, however, you will have to determine your skin tone.
Keep in mind that the colour of your skin is different from its tone, as the surface color tends to change with sun exposure. Your skin tone, on the other hand, will remain unchanged. On that note, here are the different skin tones:
Warm Skin Tone – You know you have a warm skin tone if your veins are green or brown. This skin tone looks best with dusky shades that add a charming contrast to your skin such as peach, beige, taupe, mushroom grey, oyster or champagne. For bolder colors, it’s best to choose vibrant, earthy tones like olive, moss, orchid, and even red violet.
Cool Skin Tone – The tell-tale signs of a cool skin tone are blue to purple veins. For instance, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman belong to the cool end of the color wheel.
To that end, you can add a splash of warmth by playing around with gowns that have a yellow or creamy finish, such as ivory. If you want to appear more feminine, pastel shades like peach will look fantastic against your skin, while bold hues such as lavender, ice blue, and ruby can elevate your look.
Neutral Skin Tone – The most balanced of the three, dark veins of no particular color suggest you have a neutral skin tone. Think Angelina Jolie and Julia Roberts.
There are a lot of options available to you, as any colour will look good with this skin tone, but the best ones are muted colors like pink, blush or creamy champagne. If you want to play around with louder colours, go for smoky pink, jade green, cornsilk yellow, or lagoon blue.
